Why faith? Because we need and want to please God. We also need faith to face some of the difficult situations that come into our lives. We need faith in Jesus to place those difficult situations in His hands. As His children, we need to trust Him to take care of us. Let's see if the following message will help us understand what faith is and why we need it.
FAITH: Webster says, is trust or reliance; a system of religious doctrine believed in.
We, as Christians, believe in the doctrine of Jesus Christ. Christians go by the teachings of Jesus; principles Jesus taught in His Word called the gospel. That is the doctrine of Jesus Christ. One must believe or have faith in what Jesus says or it will be impossible to receive the results one is seeking. God will not honor faith placed in something He did not say. And Yes, one can have faith in things God did not say. People all over the world have faith in and worship false doctrine, even some Christians.
Every Christian at some time or other in their walk with God has had a struggle with faith. Probably more than once. I don't care whether it is me, the greatest preacher in the world, your pastor or spouse, everyone has had a struggle with faith sometime in their life.
We may find it easy to believe Jesus shed His blood and died for our sins. Someone preached a salvation message and gave an invitation to come forward and accept Jesus as their Savior and Lord. You and I responded and became born-again Christians. It took only that measure of faith God gives to everyone, because it did not depend on our physical or mental faculties.
But we all know it is hard sometimes to have faith in God when we visit a doctor. He tells us we have some disease or sickness and there is evidence in our body to prove that and it is easy to believe the doctor. It's okay to do whatever the doctor prescribes, but it is also okay to confess, "By His stripes I am healed". God may use the doctor to heal you. But we should still have faith in God that He will do what He has promised in His Word.
Sometimes it is even harder to have faith in Jesus when our financial security is falling apart. Perhaps someone finds it more difficult to keep the faith in deep sorrow. Maybe children are lost, away from home and perhaps on drugs and it is hard to look to Jesus in that circumstance. But faith in Jesus is what will keep us going.
Much of the time if we falter in our faith we are told we did not have the right kind or we did not have enough. The only kind of faith I know anything about is faith in Jesus. Consider this, does it take a pound of faith to get saved and, let's say, two pounds of faith to get healed? I don't think so. The faith we have must be in the person of Jesus, not things, such as, salvation, healing, financial help or helping our children.
Before we get too far into our message let me explain that God is not moved or impressed by huge ministries, famous preachers, government, etc. or I might add, grumbbling, complaining people. Grumbbling, complaining, moaning and groaning and feeling sorry for oneself will get you nothing. Faith is what moves or impresses God.
We all need to realize the Bible is a spiritual book for our spiritual welfare. It is not trying to twist God's Word to see if we can force God to give us things that satisfy our carnal nature. The spiritual benefit from God's Word includes salvation, good health, happiness, soundness, contentment, success and peace. This makes out spirit and life healthy, peaceful and content. These are great blessings.
Let's see if we can discover how to acquire more of this thing God calls faith.
Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
The NIV Study Bible says it this way, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."
And the older Living Bible says, "What is faith? It is the confident assurance that somethng we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us even though we cannot wee it up ahead."
Hebrews 11:27 says, "By faith he (Moses) forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible."
Do we see Him Who is Invisible, the Invisible One?
What is faith? Is it?...
1. Throwing out a prayer and hope it gets answered? No.
2. A feeling? No...The feeling realm is for our five (5) senses.
3 Believing until things get tough...and then say, "I can't handle this" and then you go do something else rather than wait on God.
4. Goose bumps? No. The Holy Spirit may give you goose bumps and they may feel nice. But goose bumps are not faith.
None of the above are important. What is important is hearing God's Word, learning to mature in Christ and growing our faith.
Faith can be exasperating. I say that because it sometimes means waiting on God's time. God does not work on our time schedule. He works on His own and He never gets in a hurry.
The devil is the one that will exasperate you as you stand in faith waiting for God's answer. Exasperate means...to anger, rile, provoke or goad. He is trying to make you doubt God. You will even get angry at God. Oh yes you will. Most believers will not admit it.
First Peter 5:8-9a tells us, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith...."
This doesn't tell us the devil is devouring every believer, only seeking someone to devour...just don't be one of them. If you get exasperated, get angry at the devil...it's okay to get mad at him. Open you Bible and show him Matthew 7:7 that says, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:" Teil him you have faith as a mustard seed and can move that mountain if need be. Matthew 17:20. ...read more
I wish for you the faith to say, "Nevertheless, At Thy Word Lord"
God Bless You!
