What Is This Thing Called Faith?
What is Faith? What is this thing God calls faith? Is it seeing the results of something we have prayed about or for? Lots of believers talk about feeling. Then perhaps it’s a feeling? No, our feeling realm or our five senses are for us to function in the temporal or earthly realm. Even when or if we desire a material or physical thing from God, we must believe. When we ask something of God or from God, we must exercise confidence in Him. When we are trusting God for anything, whether it is material, physical or spiritual, we do not see and then believe, but believe and then see the results. That is just the way it works.
There must be an object or person to trust in and the most logical and rewarding person is God. In the very first book of the Bible called Genesis and the very first verse says that, “in the beginning God” and if we don’t believe that, then we have no basis to believe in the rest of God’s Word.
Hebrews 11:6 also tells us that without faith it is impossible to please God. If we are going to go to God, then it is necessary that we believe that He exists and that He will reward us if we diligently seek Him. We must be sure we are seeking God and not just something that will satisfy our selfish desires. Do we want God or just something He can give us?
We must believe God exists and that He loves us (John 3:16). We believe God will never leave us or forsake us (Heb. 13:5). We must believe God knows what is best for us and that He will deliver us out of all our troubles (Ps. 34:17). Then we must believe God will meet our need, not our greed (Matt. 6:8 & 32-33, Luke 9:11, Phil. 4:19, Heb. 4:16).
Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Verse two tells us that “by it” the elders obtained a good report. Of all the people mentioned in this chapter, not one of them ever prayed for material or financial blessings. What Christians hope for is eternity with Jesus, and confidence in Him tells them they can be certain of that fact even though they cannot see it yet. Christians that have grown to some degree of spiritual maturity are not so concerned with carnal things.
Nothing we study in the Word of God is so misunderstood as this thing called trust (faith). Most say they have it, but I believe they have placed it in other things beside Jesus. So called “Confession”, “Name It and Claim It”, etc. is not believing the Word of God, but rather a mental agreement with the word of some preacher. It is accepting a preacher’s interpretation of how to make God’s Word “work” for you to fulfill your selfish desires. It seems the majority are taught to place confidence in any number of things, instead of God.
Our belief (faith) may exist in large or small measure, but we learn in Luke 17:5 that the apostles asked the Lord to increase their faith and therefore we know we can ask the Lord to increase our faith or it can grow as it is practiced. If we have faith only the size of a mustard seed we can move mountains and Jesus said nothing would be impossible for us to accomplish (Matt. 17:20).
It takes complete trust in Jesus to make a total surrender to Him; to yield all into His care. We do not rely on God’s promises, but God, Himself, knowing He will fulfill His promises.

My heart is sore distressed;
It seems the burdens of this world
Have settled on my heart.
And yet I know...I know that God
Who doeth all things right
Will lead me thus to understand
To walk by FAITH...not SIGHT.
And though I may not see the way
He's planned for me to go...
The way seems dark to me just
But oh, I'm sure He knows!
Today He guides my feeble step
Tomorrow's in His right...
He has asked me to never fear...
But walk by FAITH...not SIGHT.
Some day the mist will roll away
The sun will shine again.
I'll see the beauty in the flowers,
I'll hear the bird's refrain.
And then I'll know my Father's hand
Has led the way to light
Because I placed my hand in His
And walked by FAITH...not SIGHT.
