Truth That Will Set You Free

Freedom is a choice. Do you want the truth that will set you free? Really free? You may say, “I am free, what do you mean?” I mean free from sin and the onslaught of the devil. You can be free from the torments and lies of the devil. As a matter of fact, you can be free from many things like worry, distress and depression.

Jesus said to some Jews, which were Believers, that if they would continue in His Word, they would be true disciples and they would know truth that would make them free. They argued with Him by saying they were Abraham’s seed and were never in bondage to anyone, so how could He make them free? Jesus continued by saying that whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin. The servant, He said, does not live in his lord’s house forever, but the Son abideth forever. The Son can and will make you totally free. (John 8:30-36).

The Bible says these men were believers, but they were arguing with the Master, which, I Believe we all do on occasion. The condition to be met, if new Believers are to remain true disciples and have freedom from sin, is to continue in the Word of God. No one wants to be a slave to sin, but a sinner cannot overcome sin by his own strength. The truth that sets free can be a reality in your life if it leads you to salvation.

Why Are So Many Not Free?

Jesus was talking to the religious people that walked with Him in that day. Like the Church or the religious people of today, they did not realize they needed to be set free. The people in the world need to be set free, but let’s just talk about God’s people. If there was ever a time when God’s people need to be set free, it is now in the twenty-first century.

Much of God’s Church has become powerless and many of it’s spiritual leaders are no longer preaching the truth against sin. I don’t know how long it has been since I have heard the word “repent” in a sermon. So many, in the corporate body of Christ, have turned their hearts from God to worldly things. The Church is embracing things of the devil and calling it okay. I tell you it is not okay. God is still a Holy God and will not allow His children to play around with the devil’s toys. God is looking for holy children that will follow Him into a victorious Christian life. The victorious, overcoming life is your promised land flowing with milk and honey.

The land of Canaan that was promised to Abraham and his sons was a type of our victorious life in Christ. Deuteronomy, chapter seven tells us that the promised land really belonged to the Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. The land of Canaan never belonged to the Israelites by physical or natural inheritance. It belonged to them by spiritual promise. Our victorious, overcoming life in Christ belongs to us by spiritual promise, if we do that which God requires. Here are some of those requirements. Deuteronomy 6:1-5 & 23.

  • 1. “Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

  • 2. That thou mightiest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy sons, and thy son’s sons, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

  • 3. Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

  • 4. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.

  • 5. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all they soul, and with all thy might.

  • 23. And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.”
  • The word “milk” means the fat of the land; the richest or choice part and we all know “honey” is sweet. The children of Israel were brought out of Egypt (a type of bondage) and brought into Canaan, the land flowing with milk and honey (a type of our overcoming life in Christ).

    Are You In Bondage?

Most Christians today are in spiritual bondage. Many are in financial or physical bondage of some form. It might be sin, sickness, oppression, depression, denominationalism, bad habits, doubt or unclean flesh problems, etc. The list can go on and on. The children of God need to be set free. That can only happen when you know truth. Amen? God wants His children to be free of all these things, walking holy before Him, and if not already enjoying a victorious life, at least reaching for it.

I am not saying you will never have another problem. Problems come to all of us in some form or another. It may be in the form of any of the above. Years ago I had a stomach ulcer, which the doctor said there was no cure for. I told the doctor I would not receive that report and sometime later the Lord healed it. I don’t even know when, one day it was just gone.

My husband has 4 stents in his heart, has had colon cancer surgery, and has diabetes. In all the years he has had all these problems, the Lord keeps him going with a happy heart and we thank God for that. Two years ago he had lung cancer and was given 6 months to a year to live. The Lord healed him of that and now his lungs are cancer free. I tell you if you know the Lord, you know truth that sets free. God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). What He has done for us He will do for you.

I don’t know why we get healed of one thing and not another. Perhaps it is to keep our faith fit. Perhaps it is to keep us trusting God. Nothing drives us to God like problems. David said in Psalms 119:67 that before he was afflicted he went astray. I know that no matter what our circumstances, if you give God control of your life, He will take care of you.

Again, I am not saying you will live without problems. I am telling you that if you know and trust the Lord, you can have peace in your heart, knowing God is taking care of you. Psalms 34:17 says that the Lord hears the cry of the righteous and delivers them out of all their troubles.

I am convinced that if Believers had the right kind of teaching about faith, the Church would be full of powerful, faith wielding Christians that have been set free by the truth of the Gospel. Instead many Believers don’t really know God. Oh, they know about Him, but they don’t know Him.

In John, chapter 21, we find Peter and some of the disciples gathered together immediately after the death of Jesus. They must have thought all was lost. Jesus, their beloved Master was dead, or so they thought. Peter said that he was going fishing and the others agreed to go with him. Come morning they saw a man standing on the shore. They had caught no fish, so this man told them to cast their nets on the right side of the ship. When they obeyed they caught a multitude of fish. Then they realized the man on the shore was Jesus. Jesus said bring your fish and “come and dine.”

    Will You Come And Dine?

I believe this same Lord is asking us today to “come and dine.” I believe God desires us to “come and dine” on the spiritual things of His. His request to “come and dine” is a choice you must make. He will not force you. God has placed within us the freedom of choice. I have to choose every day if I am going to read the Bible, pray, fellowship God, live for Him or for myself. I have to choose whether I am going to pay my tithes and offerings, be obedient to Him or just live for what I want.

Because of the half-truth messages we have heard for so many years there are multitudes that no longer have faith in the God of the Bible. Because of the poison spewed from many pulpits some no longer know what God’s Word says. Most people don’t even read their Bible they just believe whatever the preacher says. Because so many preachers and teachers no longer care what God’s Word says, and do not seem to fear God, they have made merchandise of their followers (II Peter 2:1-3). This means they will sell you a bill of goods for your money.

Because of the many false preachers and teachers, Believers have missed the truth that sets free. Jesus said you would know the truth and that truth would make you free. The truth that makes you free is found in God’s Word. One of those truths is the fact that God made provision for our physical and financial well being. The law against worry and anxiety is found in Luke 12:22-30. Then in verse 31, we are told to seek the kingdom of God and all necessary things would be added. I believe that is the way God would like to work in our lives, but we limit Him because we don’t have the faith needed to trust Him.

Salvation, the born-again experience, sets you free from this world. No longer do you have to live like the ungodly. You now have a different set of morals and principles to live by and eternity in heaven to look forward to.

I believe there is a place in God we can reach that will allow us to depend on a higher source to meet our needs. That source is a loving God.

    Lindbergh On Truth

In my youth, science was more important to me than either man or God. I worshipped science. Its advance had surpassed man's wildest dreams. It took many years for me to discover that science, with all its brilliance, lights only a middle chapter of creation.

I saw the aircraft I love destroying the civilization I expected it to save. Now I understand that spiritual truth is more essential to a nation than the mortar in its cities' walls. For when the actions of a people are undergirded by spiritual truths, there is safety. When spiritual truths are rejected, it is only a matter of time before civilization will collapse.

We must understand spiritual truths and apply them to our modern life. We must draw strength from the almost forgotten virtues of simplicity, humility, contemplation and prayer. It requires a dedication beyond science, beyond self, but the rewards are great and it is our only hope.
