The Thief

Who is the “thief” of Scripture? We need to understand just who the “thief” is and the damage he can do. John 10:10a says, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy:….” Most Christians know that Satan is the thief and that at one time he was an archangel called Lucifer. This archangel, called Lucifer, wanted to take God’s place in Heaven and be worshipped. He and a third of the angels were cast out of Heaven because of their treason. He is now called many names such as Satan, the devil, that old dragon, the adversary, the accuser, etc. and roams the earth trying to find someone he can destroy. As I said, most Christians know that Satan is the “thief” of Scripture. But I want to take this explanation one step further.

I want to take this explanation further because multitudes today are listening to the false self-proclaimed prophets of today. I see Christians of today following these men and women without one care whether they are teaching the truth or not. I am greatly concerned about these deceived people and pray that they will realize the deception and really turn to God for answers. They seem to believe whatever makes them feel good. But you know what? The things they feel in their flesh has nothing to do with the truth of God’s Word.

This mention of the thief is talking about hirelings. Let’s read it in John 10:10-13,

”The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I (Jesus) am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth; and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hirling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.”

The thief Jesus is talking about in the above Scriptures has to do with false teachers and preachers. This thief is the hirelings, false prophets or teachers, the devil’s puppets, flunkies, or instruments of Satan. Second Corinthians 11:13-15 tells us that false apostles and deceitful workers transform themselves into the apostles of Christ (They come preaching in the name of Jesus). And it continues by telling us not to think this is a marvelous thing, because Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. How easy it would be to deceive us if someone would come as an angel of light, if we do not know the Word of God. Then it tells us that it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. I believe many of the spiritual leaders of today are just such ministers as we are being warned about in this Scripture.

Let’s explore some things about a thief. Some synonyms for thief are rip-off artist, swindler, fleecer, sneak thief, and con artist. They are people who steal from you under false pretenses. Second Peter, chapter 2, verses 1-3 says, ”But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies,….And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you:….. Damnable heresies are evil perverted Scriptures that will damn the soul.

Let’s look further. If I were to sit you down at my dinner table and place before you a big juicy steak and told you somewhere in that steak was a tiny bit of poison, would you still eat it hoping you get around the poison? But that is what millions are doing when they listen to false prophets and teachers. They are hoping they can trust these teachers. After all, they have such big ministries and lots of money and some of them are on television, surely they are godly men and women. This is what most people think. Some are believing that all the teachers they hear are presenting them with truth from God’s Word. Well, they do preach some truth. But like the big juicy steak with a tiny bit of poison, it takes only a small amount of biblical error to destroy you and they insert small doses of error to fool you.

The above Scripture says they will with feigned words make merchandise of you. Feigned means fake, fraudulent, pretended, camouflaged, misleading and insincere. These are the kind of words our Father, in His Word, says these false prophets and teachers will use to deceive us. They do this to make merchandise of each of us. To make merchandise means to sell us a bill of goods for our money. Oh, the devil has some very dazzling and talented men and women working for him.

I want to explain more about the statement Jesus made about the thief coming to kill, steal and destroy. Listening to these so-called Christian leaders of today will not kill your body, but they very well may kill your spirit. They may lead you down the wrong path and cause you to miss heaven. They kill the truth of God’s Word and instead give you another gospel, a beguiling gospel. Galatians 1:6-9 says, ”I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Now let’s look at the word steal. Synonyms for steal are rob, thieve, swindle, plunder and fleece. This is what false prophets and teachers do best. They will lie to you and steal from you with their slick gimmicks. They will convince you that God wants you rich and you can live like they do if you will only give them a really good love offering.

Now the word destroy. We all know what these words mean, but most have never related them to what they are listening to from these false people in high places. Peter told us that there would be false prophets and teachers in our time. Who do people think they are? They are not teachers of false religions. Then they must be false teachers in our Christian world. The word destroy means demolish, tear down, devastate, lay waste, work havoc upon, plunder, seal the doom of and subdue. This is what they will do to your Christian life if you allow them.

Let’s read John, chapter 8, verses 31-32. “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

False prophets and teachers can not deceive us
when we really know God’s Word.

Ask God to reveal the truth to you as you read His Word.
