This message about temptation is a follow up of the message called “Poison Fruit” when we talked about God telling Adam not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. We discovered they were disobedient and were forced from the garden. Now they will have a life of hardships. We learned that now, all mankind, is born into a fallen or sinful life and must look to Jesus for salvation.

Let’s learn more about this tree of knowledge of good and evil. In chapter 3 of Genesis we find out that Eve, Adam’s mate, ate of the fruit and took it to Adam and he ate also. Why did Eve eat the fruit from that tree when she and Adam had all the other trees to eat from? The devil tempted Eve with the fruit from that tree because the source of his power is rooted in that tree.

That tree represents our choice to serve good or evil, God or the devil. Total submission to God keeps us safe and free from the devil’s poison. The source of the devil’s power today is still rooted in the poison fruit of that tree. Much of the perverted gospel of today is a temptation and comes as good, but if taken to heart and believed will destroy us.

Notice that this tree is called, the tree of knowledge of “good” and “evil”. If you will notice nearly everything that comes around, comes in the guise of “good”, and later turns out to be bad or sinful. Even most of the “good” things men and women do are rooted in that tree, because their motives are wrong. Let’s look at Genesis 3:6.

”And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”

Like today, in their greed to satisfy the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, it was easy to listen to the voice of temptation. Eve saw that the fruit of that tree was good for food (the lust of the flesh), and it was pleasant to the eyes (the lust of the eyes), and would make one wise (the pride or life). Temptations from the devil still come in these three forms. If you are tempted, let's say, to look at obscene pictures or movies, and you dissect or examine that temptation you will find that it falls under the category of the "lust of the eyes." It is the same with additional temptations that will fall under the same category or the other two mentioned.

As Adam and Eve yielded to temptation they became obedient to the voice of the devil or Satan and disobedient to their Creator, God. The Bible teaches that separation from God is death, spiritual death. Therefore, true to God’s warning, Adam and Eve died spiritually upon their banishment from the garden. They no longer had God’s presence or His blessings in their lives because fellowship with God was broken.

Adam and Eve are now vulnerable to the harsh elements of the curse that God decreed because of their disobedience. Eve will bear her children in pain and Adam will toil for their existence from the cursed ground (Gen. 2:17-18). They are subject now to disease germs and even physical death. Their life has become one of extreme hardships.

God had given Adam and Eve a choice. God has always given His creation the freedom to choose. Instead of making puppets or robots to worship Him, He wants people to worship Him, by choice, from a heart of love. Adam and Eve chose to be obedient to the devil’s voice, therefore, they became his children.

Since that time everyone is born into a fallen or sinful nature created by the disobedience of our original parents, Adam and Eve. Each and every person begins his or her life in the spiritual gutter of existence, undone, lost, spiritually dead, without hope in a world of spiritual darkness. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

A gutter is a narrow ditch, usually at the roadside to drain off surface water. It usually carries, with the water, all kinds of filth. A gutter can also be a narrow ditch that carries sewage. Our sojourn on earth in the spiritual gutter of existence has nothing to do with how we live financially.

Our life is governed by a self-centered, greedy nature, ruled by Satan, which God calls a sinner, or a Christ-like nature ruled by the Holy Spirit, which God calls a saint. Who are those God calls “sinners”? Those who have yielded to temptation, not repented and accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. Webster says “sinner” means: one who sins; one who sins without repenting; hence an incorrigible transgressor.

Let’s take a brief look at the flesh birth; It produces a sinful nature that makes every unsaved person a child of the devil (John 8:44 & I John 3:10). It leads to a life of rebellion against God, unless one is born again by the seed of God (I Peter 1:23).

There is a way provided to raise us from the spiritual gutter of existence to born-again children of God. His name is Jesus. John 14:6 tells us Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and no man can have access to the Father except through Him.

”Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”

Acts 4:12

John Newton's life rule:

"I make it a rule of Christian duty never to go to a place where there is not room for my Master as well as myself."

Jesus Answering The Door

Martin Luther was often very graphic in his description of the activities of the devil. Asked one time how he overcame the devil, he replied, "Well, when he comes knocking upon the door of my heart, and asks 'Who lives here?' the dear Lord Jesus goes to the door and says, 'Martin Luther used to live here but he has moved out. Now I live here." The devil seeing the nail-prints in the hands, and the pierced side, takes flight immediatedly." It is surely good for every life and for every home to have Jesus as a permanent resident. This assured, heavenly blessings are sure to fall upon such bodies.
