Saved…From What? Have you ever heard that question or perhaps said it yourself? The first time I heard it was some 35 or 40 years ago. I was living in Amarillo, Texas at the time and was acquainted with a young lady we will call Mary. She, myself and another lady were discussing being saved, or as others put it, being born-again which is the God ordained way to become a child of God. Then out of the mouth of Mary came these words. "Saved…From What?" Here we were, right in the middle of the United States, with churches practically on every corner and Mary did not know what we were talking about.
To answer this question let’s go back to the Garden of Eden. Everyone knows about Adam and Eve in the garden and how Eve was tempted by the devil as he came to her as a serpent. She ate the fruit of the forbidden tree and gave to Adam and he ate also. They betrayed God in this one act of disobedience and were cast out of the garden.
The Bible says in Gen. 2:15-17, ”And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
Just think about it. This glorious, all powerful God of the Universe was betrayed by His own creation. Fellowship was broken and shattered. God said if they disobeyed and ate from the forbidden tree, they would die. Well they did not die physically, so did God change His mind. No. They died spiritually. To be spiritually dead means we no longer have fellowship with God. To be spiritually dead means God no longer knows us. We are now what is known as a sinner. So now something had to be done to restore that fellowship, that communication that is so precious to God and His creation.
The consequences of this treachery is visited on every human born since that time. All are born with a sin nature. Please understand that you are not a sinner because you sin. You sin because you are a sinner. Therefore, we needed someone to restore that broken fellowship. The problem was that it would take someone that was without sin. Who could that possibly be? Well, God already had that covered.
Revelation 13: 8 tells us about a Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. God knew all this was going to happen, therefore, He had a sacrifice already prepared. That Lamb and sacrifice for mankind was and is Jesus. Jesus is the only One Who can save us. Let’s look to God’s Word, the final authority to confirm this
First Timothy 1:14-15 says, ”And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners;….”
One day John, the Baptist, was baptizing people and Scripture says in John 1:29, ”The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
Now, that does not mean that Jesus, the Lamb of God, just took all sin out of the world. It means He took the sin of the world upon Himself at Calvary, but only those who repent and accept Him as their Lord and Savior have their sins washed away by His blood.
One man came to Jesus and asked Him a question in John 3:1-3 and, ”Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
First Peter says, ”Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”
Romans 6:23 says, ”For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” We already learned that Adam and Eve did not die physically, but spiritually. If we die in our sin without repenting and accepting Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we die spiritually. That means eternal separation from God. For all eternity we will be in a burning hell, forever separated from the One Who loved us enough to hang on a cross between heaven and earth and shed His blood for your sin and mine. Saved…From What? Our old sin nature, that’s what.
The only way to go from a sinner to a saint is to accept this Jesus, this Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. You do this by bowing your head and telling God you are sorry you have sinned against Him and ask Jesus to come into your heart and be the Lord and Savior of your life. He will.
Had it not been for a man called Jesus,
Had it not been for the Old Rugged Cross,
Had it not been for a place called Calvary,
Then forever my soul would be lost.
The Spirit of God comes to your heart's door and knocks. He stands there, while storms gather and break upon his unsheltered head, while the sun declines and night comes on with its chills and its heavy dews. He waits and knocks, but you must open the door yourself. The only latch is inside.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only be-
