What Does It Mean To Be Saved
Or
Born Again?
Many years ago I was talking to a lady about being saved
and she said “Saved, from what?” Well, this really surprised me
because, in my ignorance, I presumed everyone knew what being saved
was. So needless to say, I began to think about how we Christians talk
sometimes. We throw out words that we use all the time to describe
Christianity, words like saved, born again, anointing, slain in the
Spirit, etc. not ever thinking that others may not know what we are
talking about. So you see, this question is not unusual at all.
When Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden,
they were given freedom to eat the fruit from every tree that was
there, except one. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was off
limits. But Satan, using a serpent, beguiled Eve and she disobeyed God
and ate the fruit from that tree and gave to Adam and he ate also. Do
you think because it was a forbidden tree the fruit from it looked more
enticing? Perhaps, but because they disobeyed God they had to leave the
Garden of Eden.
God was angry because, first of all, Satan entered the
Garden, using a serpent, and deceived His creation and second, because
His creation did not honor His demands. God placed a curse on the
serpent (Gen. 3:14) and one on Satan (Gen. 3:15). Now, because they
transgressed God’s Word and were forced to leave the Garden of Eden,
they are now children of Satan and have taken on a sinful or carnal
nature. Since that time everyone born into the world is born into this
sinful or carnal nature.
Now, to be restored to fellowship with God or stand
righteous before Him one must be born again or saved. The reason we can
be saved or born again is because Jesus came and died on a cross,
shedding His blood for the sins of everyone, therefore restoring our
relationship with God, The Father.
To be born again or saved means you have felt remorse
for your sins and repented (told God how sorry you are that you have
sinned against Him). You have accepted Jesus’ shed blood for the
forgiveness of your sins, and by faith, have asked Him to come into
your heart and be your Savior and Lord. Upon doing this you are now a
new creature. God is now your Father, your sins are forgiven and you
now want to live for God and glorify Him.
Jesus said in John 3:3,
- “…Except a man be born again,
he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
You cannot be good enough to accomplish this, neither
can you purchase it with money.
Eph. 2:8 says,
- “For by grace are ye saved
through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:”
