Where Does Satan Come From?

There are many that ask the question, “Where does Satan come from?” Well, the only place to find our answer is in God’s Word, the Bible. Let’s go there and see what we can find.

Isaiah 14:12-15, in The Living Bible, tells us,

  • 12. “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, mighty though you were against the nations of the world. 13. For you said to yourself, “I will ascend to heaven and rule the angels. I will take the highest throne. I will preside on the Mount of Assembly far away in the north. 14. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High." 15 But instead, you will be brought down to the pit of hell, down to its lowest depths.”
  • This is the only place in the Bible that the name of Lucifer appears and it is describing his downfall. Satan is an angel, but a fallen angel. When he was created his name was Lucifer. He had visions of taking over heaven and sitting on God’s throne. Will you notice the four “I will’s” in the above Scripture. His downfall came because of his arrogance and beauty. Let’s look at Ezekiel 28:11-17, The Living Bible where there was an earthly king of Tyre, but the supernatural or spiritual king of Tyre was Lucifer who is mostly referred to in this prophecy.

  • 11. “Then this further message came to me from the Lord: 12. Son of dust, weep for the king of Tyre. Tell him, the Lord God says: You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. 13. You were in Eden, the garden of God; your clothing was bejeweled with every precious stone—ruby, topaz, diamond, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, carbuncle, and emerald—all in beautiful settings of finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. 14. I appointed you to be the anointed guardian cherub. You had access to the holy mountain of God. You walked among the stones of fire. 15. You were perfect in all you did from the day you were created until that time when wrong was found in you. 16. Your great wealth filled you with internal turmoil and you sinned. Therefore, I cast you out of the mountain of God like a common sinner. I destroyed you, O overshadowing cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17. Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. Therefore I have cast you down to the ground and exposed you helpless before the curious gaze of kings.”
  • This anointed guardian cherub, or angel, was a created being called Lucifer. And since he sinned he was cast out to the earth and is now called Satan. In Luke 10:18 Jesus said, ”I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.”

So we find that Satan was a created being or angel named Lucifer that was a guardian cherub. We discovered that he was puffed up with pride because of his beauty and rebelled against God. He wanted to take over God’s throne and be the supreme ruler. He was thrown out of heaven to the earth and is now known as Satan. Now the earth is his for an allotted time. One day he will be sent to hell for all eternity.
