Bewitched
Is it possible for Christians to be bewitched? Do Christians believe they are so spiritual they cannot be deceived? If you believe this you’re already deceived. I don’t mean to hurt feelings or give offense when I say that but I believe time as we know it is running out. I believe Jesus is coming soon for His Believers, those who have been saved and are living for Him. So I believe it is crucial for all Believers to take stock of their spiritual life and see how it lines up with the Word of God. After all, none of us want to miss heaven. To be “bewitched” means to be vexed with or possessed with a devil. It means to fascinate by false representation. Well, let’s see what God’s Word says about this. In Acts 20:28-30 Paul is very concerned about false teachers distorting the truth of God’s Word to those he had been teaching. Let’s read it. - 28“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.”
This is Paul’s warning about divisions and strife in the church of his day. It is still a warning for the church of today. It is a serious warning about false teachers and self-proclaimed prophets of today, yet people don’t seem to be concerned about whether they are bewitched or not. Peter said in Second Peter 2:1 these words, - ”But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies,….”
Peter goes on to say in verses 2-3, - 2”And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you:….”
This means they will tell you what you want to hear or what sounds good so you will give them money and make them rich. What are damnable heresies? They are Scriptures taken out of context and perverted so they will sound good to the one being taught. They will damn your soul to hell. That is why they are called damnable heresies. If we don’t want to be bewitched then it is critical that each of us study God’s Word so we can protect ourselves from those ravenous wolves that will devour us for their own benefits. Paul says in Galatians 3:1, - ”O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, ….”
That truth is found in God’s Word. Reading and studying God’s Word will help keep you from being deceived. We must know what God’s Word says so when we hear teaching or preaching we will know if what they say lines up with God’s whole counsel or not. Don’t be bewitched, be like the people in Berea, who searched the Scriptures daily to see if what was being preached to them was indeed the truth. (Acts 17:11).
